Schwerer Gustav: The World's Biggest Gun. The Nazis under Hitler developed a number of crazy weapons. The Seige of Sevastopol. It was until early 1942 that Gustav found a target Over the next few weeks the heavy gun would fire 17 addition shells during the siege. On July 4th the remaining Soviet forces surrendered and the Germans took control of the city and what was left of the military installations.

As impressive as big guns were, they were totally impractical given the difficulty of moving and emplacing them. Given their great size they were also easily seen from the air and therefore subject to attack from aircraft. Their bulk also meant that they could not be hidden easily in a convenient tunnel like smaller railway guns (See our article on Anzio Annie). With its new barrel, Gustav was disassembled and moved to Leningrad where the German's anticipated using it in an attack of on the city. The attack was cancelled, however, and the heavy gun was never used again. Finally, maintenance and the cost of shells were expensive, and hard to justify when there were smaller, more covert tanks readily available. Schwerer Gustav, like many large railway guns, could only be raised and lowered in elevation, but not turned (or traversed) to the left or the right. To aim these type of railway guns it was necessary to find or build a curved section of track. The barrel could then be aimed by moving the gun back and forth along the curve until it was pointed at the target.

In 1934, the only thing standing in the way of Hitler invading France was the French Maginot Line. Really, it was the only thing that stood in the way of Hitler and Western Europe, a fortification running from the Rhine River to La Ferté made of concrete blockhouses, bunkers, and rail lines. The line was elaborate and extensive, and as rumors of its strength traveled to Germany, Hitler began to believe he’d need a miracle for his troops to break through it.

Battle of Sevastopol is a 2015 Russian-Ukrainian war drama about the biography of Lyudmila Pavlichenko - the most famous of the Soviet woman sniper. The following weapons were used in the film Battle of Sevastopol (Bitva za Sevastopol).. In order to meet the requirements set forth, Krupp engineer Erich Müller calculated that the weapon would have to be far bigger, and much more powerful than any weapon in existence. Finally, Müller put together the measurements for his goliath gun and presented the plan to the OKH.

The gun could fire a heavy concrete-piercing shell and a lighter high-explosive shell. A super-long-range rocket projectile was also planned with a range of 150 km, that would require the barrel being extended to 84 metres. After using the Schwerer Gustav railway gun just once, the Germans realized the impracticality of it. First, the sheer number of men needed to fire just one round of ammunition was insane. During battle, it was hard to spare that many men just for one task. The Gustav Gun, (properly known as the Schwerer Gustav gun), was a siege gun developed in preparation for World War 2 and is the largest caliber rifled weapon to see combat in the history of artillery. The Gustav is also notable for firing the heaviest shell of any artillery piece. The only guns to exceed the Gustav in caliber are the British Mallet’s Mortar (36 inches/944mm) and the Fench Monster Mortar (36 French inches, 975 mm). The Germans possessed two Gustav guns with the second being named Dora. They were designed as railway siege guns with the primary purpose of destroying heavy fortifications such as those found at the French Maginot line. Since the weapons were not ready when the Wehrmacht outflanked the Maginot line during the Battle of France, Gustav was moved to the Eastern Front to be used in the siege of Sevastopol during Operation Barbarossa, Leningrad, and during the Warsaw uprising.

Gustav Gun World War 2 Fact

Krupp built a test model in late 1939 and sent it to the Hillersleben firing range for testing. Penetration was tested on this occasion. Firing at high elevation, the 7.1 tonne shell was able to penetrate the specified seven metres of concrete and the one metre armour plate.[3] When the tests were completed in mid-1940 the complex carriage was further developed. Alfried Krupp, after whose father the gun was named, personally hosted Hitler at the Rügenwald Proving Ground during the formal acceptance trials of the Gustav Gun in early 1941. Named after the head of the Krupp family, Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, the Gustav Gun weighed in at a massive 1344 tons, so heavy that even though it was attached to a rail car, it still had to be disassembled before moving so as to not destroy the twin set of tracks as it passed over. This 4-story behemoth stood 20 feet wide and 140 feet long. Its 500 man crew, commanded by a Major-General (that's two stars), needed nearly three full days (54 hours, to be exact) to set it up and prep for firing. But when it did fire, whoowhee, hold on to your hat. While most railway guns of that era could be operational after just a few hours, Schwerer Gustav was so large that it needed not just one track, but two parallel tracks laid side-by-side at a specific distance. This meant before the gun could be used it had to be transported to the location pulled by a regular 25 car train, then assembled and placed onto a set of specially prepared parallel tracks. The assembly operation, not includingly the time to lay the special track, could take three days and involved laying another set of parallel tracks on either side of the two for Gustav to support a pair of cranes. With a maximum elevation of 48 degrees, the HE shell could hit a target 29 miles away, while the bunker-buster could nail anything within 23 miles—both with reasonable accuracy. The Gustav could basically fire a shell over the widest point of Long Island, NY and hit nothing but water. If it did hit, the HE would leave a 30-foot deep crater while the piercing round could penetrate as much as 264 feet of reinforced concrete (or height of the Seattle Exchange Building).Formally known as the Kaiser Wilhelm Geschutz Long-Range Guns, the weapons were produced by the dreaded Friedrich Krupp A.G. munitions firm. The guns used bored-out, 380mm naval cannons, each fitted with barrels that were 131 ft. long. Seven were produced, though never more than three operated at any time. For sheer firepower, it's hard to imagine anything outgunning the planet-killing Death Star from the "Star Wars" movies. Not for lack of trying, though. Since the first catapults and cannons took aim, the search has been on for guns that can shoot farther, faster, and deliver more deadly results. Yet there are also those who've foreseen the opportunity to put these weapons to peaceful purposes.Dora was the second gun to be produced. It was deployed briefly against Stalingrad, where the gun arrived at its emplacement 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) to the west of the city sometime in mid-August 1942. It was ready to fire on 13 September. It was quickly withdrawn when Soviet encirclement threatened. When the Germans began their long retreat they took Dora with them. Dora was broken up before the end of the war, being discovered in the west by American troops some time after the discovery of Schwerer Gustav.

In February 1942, Heavy Artillery Unit (E) 672 reorganised and went on the march, and Schwerer Gustav began its long ride to the Crimea. The train carrying the gun was of 25 cars, a total length of 1.5 kilometres. The gun reached the Perekop Isthmus in early March 1942, where it was held until early April. A special railway spur line was built to the Simferopol-Sevastopol railway 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) north of the target, at the end of which four semi-circular tracks were built specially for the Gustav to traverse. Outer tracks were required for the cranes which assembled Gustav. The siege of Sevastopol was the gun's first combat test. Installation began in early May, and by 5 June the gun was ready to fire. A woman who changed the course of history, based on true real life events from the Battle For Sevastopol Plans were completed for the weapon in early 1937 and fabrication started in the middle of the year. Like other large guns of that era, it was planned that Schwerer Gustav (Gustav after the name of the senior director of Krupp and Schwerer, which meant "heavy" for obvious reasons) was to be a railway gun. Using the railroad was an obvious way to transport very heavy weapons systems in that era, though it limited the device to only places where a railroad line existed or could be built. In 1939, Adolf "Baby Dick" Hitler needed to figure out how to get past the French Maginot line, a 1500km defensive wall of fortifications, tank barriers, artillery and machine gun nests running along the French-German and French-Italian borders. Before he figured out to simply run around the line via Belgium, Hitler schemed to destroy it outright. To that end, he recruited the Friedrich Krupp A.G. company of Essen, Germany to build him a weapon capable of doing so. By 1941, the Krupp company had designed and built the largest gun of all time, the "Gustav Gun."It was until early 1942 that Gustav found a target. In June of 1941 the Germans launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. By February of the next year the Germans were laying siege to the city of Sevastopol in the Crimea and decided to bring the big gun to their eastern front.

The Langer Gustav was a long cannon with 52 centimetre caliber and a 43 metre barrel. It was intended to fire super-long-range rocket projectiles weighing 680 kilograms to a range of 190 kilometres. This gave it the range to hit London. It was never completed after being damaged during construction by one of the many RAF bombing raids on Essen. The gun was then dismantled and moved to the northern part of the eastern front, where an attack was planned on Leningrad. The gun was placed 30 km from the city near the railway station of Taizy. The gun was fully operational when the attack was cancelled. The gun then spent the winter of 1942/43 near Leningrad. The Heavy Artillery Unit (E) 672 began its march to the Crimea area in February of 1942 taking the Schwerer Gustav gun with them. The train transporting the gun was 25 cars in length (1.5 km), and the gun arrived at the Perekop Isthmus in early March 1942 and stayed there until early April. The Germans built a special railway line to the Simferopol-Sevastopol railway 9.9 miles north of the target with four semi-circular tracks to allow the gun to be aimed at different targets. Outer tracks were then constructed to service the cranes required for the assembly of Gustav.

They charged seven million Reichsmark for the second gun Dora, named after the senior engineer's wife. Determined to keep his concept alive, Bull made a series of bad business decisions. One landed him in U.S. prison for illegal arms trading. He then accepted an offer to build a supergun for Saddam Hussein, though many feared it might be used to lob weapons of mass destruction onto Israel.

Sevastopol Winery's website » At this point development stalled until Adolf Hitler visited Essen in March 1936 and asked about the feasibility of the Gustav gun. After this trip, design work began on the 80cm model with plans completed in 1936 and approved. Construction of the gun started in the summer of 1937 with a number of technical challenges faced  during the forging of large pieces of steel. A test model was built in 1939 and successfully penetrated one meter of armor plating and seven feet of reinforced steel at the Hillersleben firing range. In 1934 the German Army High Command (OKH) commissioned Krupp of Essen to design a gun to destroy the forts of the French Maginot Line which were nearing completion. The gun's shells had to punch through seven metres of reinforced concrete or one full metre of steel armour plate, from beyond the range of French artillery. Krupp engineer Erich Müller calculated that the task would require a weapon with a calibre of around 80 cm, firing a projectile weighing 7 tonnes from a barrel 30 metres long. The weapon would have a weight of over 1000 tonnes. The size and weight meant that to be at all movable it would need to be supported on twin sets of railway tracks. In common with smaller railway guns, the only barrel movement on the mount itself would be elevation, traverse being managed by moving the weapon along a curved section of railway line. Krupp prepared plans for calibres of 70 cm, 80 cm, 85 cm, and 1 m. As often happens in war, the original mission evaporated when German troops outflanked the Maginot line, quickly forcing France to surrender. Plans to use the Gustav against the British at Gibraltar were also scrapped, but eventually Gustav found a suitable target. To have the kind of power needed, the cannon would have to be gigantic. With a barrel with an inside diameter of 31 inches (80 cm) and a length of 107 feet (32.5 m) it was far larger than even those found on the battleships of the day. A single shell for this gun alone would weigh 7 tons and the gun itself over 1300 tons. The high explosive version of the shell would create a create a crater in the ground 30 feet (9.1m) wide and 30 feet deep. With the ability to fire a round almost 30 miles (48km) it could keep safely out of range of any retaliating artillery. bars-guns.ru (Санкт-Петербург) Schwerer Gustav. 2.6K likes.
